ON WORLD DISABILITY DAY, INDIA LAUNCHES ACCESSIBILITY PROGRAMME

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday launched the Accessible India programme that aims to make hundreds of government buildings, railway stations and airports accessible to people with physical disabilities by next year.


WAR HERO ALBERT EKKA’S ‘SACRED EARTH’ HANDED OVER TO FAMILY

Chief Minister Raghubar Das today handed over the urn carrying the ‘sacred earth’ brought from the place of burial of 1971 war martyr Albert Ekka to his family at Jari village in Gumla district. Das called on the martyr’s wife Balamdina at her residence, paid tributes at the soldier’s statue before addressing the Martyr Festival at the village organised on the 45th martyrdom of Ekka.

Justice Tirath Singh Thakur was on Thursday sworn in as 43rd Chief Justice of India by President Pranab Mukherjee at an elegant function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.The senior-most judge of the apex court, 63-year old Justice Thakur took over from incumbent Justice H L Dattu who retired on Wednesday.


HALF OF ALL ROAD VICTIMS ARE 18-30 YEARS OLD

More than half of those who fall prey to road accidents in the country belong to the productive age group of 18 to 30 years, the highest such number being recorded in Delhi. Seeking to demystify these searing figures, Save LIFE Foundation (SLF), an NGO seeking to promote safe driving habits, organised a discussion focussed on strengthening existing road safety laws in the country. According to data available with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2014, Delhi tops the country-wide chart accounting for 8.30% of the total deaths arising out of road accidents. In the last year, 7,191 cases of road accidents were reported in the National capitol alone, leaving 1332 dead and around 6826 injured. Delhi is closely followed by Chennai, which reported 1046 deaths involving road accidents in the same period. Significantly, a total of 1.47 lakh people were killed in India in 2014, with a daily average of 387 deaths.


EBAY FOUNDER’S PHILANTHROPIC FIRM TO INVEST $350 MN IN INDIA

Omidyar Network, the philanthropic investing firm of billionaire eBay founder, Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, plans to invest over $350 million (Rs.2,333 crore) in for-profit ventures and non-profit organisations in India by 2020.Roopa Kudva, partner at Omidyar said the Silicon Valley-based firm had already invested about $160 million (Rs.1,067 crore) in the country.


MUMBAI-AHMEDABAD BULLET TRAIN PROJECT TO COST RS 98,000 CRORE

An Indian Railways-Japan International Cooperation Agency feasibility study has concluded that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad 505-km high-speed rail corridor will cost an estimated Rs 98,000 crore. Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha, stated this in a written reply during question hour in Parliament on Wednesday.Though there is no visibility on when the project will start, it is estimated that trains on this corridor run at a top speed of 320 kmph, reducing commute time between the two cities to less than two hours from the current seven.

INDIA’S LARGEST COAL MINE COMING UP AT BIRBHUM: MAMATA BANERJEE

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced setting up of a new venture to develop the country’s largest coal mine in the state. Banerjee said that a special purpose vehicle — Bengal Birbhum Coalfields Ltd — has been created to develop the mine at Deocha-Pachami in Birbhum district. The block has been offered jointly to West Bengal, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited.


DETECTING CANCER WITH PROTON THERAPY

Members of the multi-national research team behind the PRaVDA (Proton Radiotherapy Verification and Dosimetry Applications) project, led by the University of Lincoln (UK), are now building the instrument that will produce for the first time detailed three-dimensional images of a patient’s anatomy, using protons rather than x-rays.To produce these Proton CT images, the worldfirst technology will use the same high energy particles that are used to destroy a tumour during proton therapy treatment.


AGRA TO HOST FIRST-EVER INTERNATIONAL BIRD FESTIVAL

In a bid to promote Uttar Pradesh as an international bird watching destination, the state forest department, in collaboration with Ficci, will hold a three-day international festival on birds at the National Chambal Sanctuary (NCS) in Agra, an official said.The festival starts on December 4 and will end on December 6.
