SANIA MIRZA AND MARTINA HINGIS WIN AUS OPEN, PAIR’S 3RD GRAND SLAM

1.Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza maintained their perfect record in Grand Slam doubles finals, beating the Czech pair of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6, 6-3 at the Australian Open on Friday to extend their winning streak to 36 matches on the way to a third major title.

2.Mirza and Hingis beat Hlavackova and Hradecka in two tight, topsy-turvy sets 7-6 (1), 6-3 in a match that lasted one hour, 49 minutes.

3.The Indo-Swiss duo began the second set on a much better note, breaking in the first game. Mirza then managed a hold of serve to consolidate the break for a 2-0 lead.


 

GOA: RELEASE OF NATHURAM GODSE BOOK ON MAHATMA GANDHI’S DEATH ANNIVERSARY KICKS UP ROW

1.Newly formed Goa Forward party has opposed the release of a book on Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse scheduled for Saturday on the death anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

2.The book, titled ‘Nathuram Godse – The Story of an Assassin’ and written by Anup Ashok Sardesai, is scheduled for release tomorrow at the government-owned Ravindra Bhavan in Margao by BJP leader and the bhavan’s chairman Damodar Naik. “The use of government premises for such an unpatriotic cause should be stopped. We will hold ‘satyagraha’ in front of Ravindra Bhavan if the government allows the function to happen,” Goa Forward’s secretary Mohandas Lolienkar said.


 

GOVT LOWERS GDP GROWTH RATE TO 7.2%

1.Government has marginally revised downward the economic growth for 2014-15 to 7.2 per cent from the earlier estimate of 7.3 per cent after factoring in latest data on agriculture and industrial production.

2.GDP growth rate for 2013-14 has also revised downwards to 6.6 per cent from earlier estimate of 6.9 per cent.

3.According to the statement, estimates of GDP and other aggregates for the years 2011-12 to 2013-14 have also undergone revision due to use of latest available data on agricultural production and industrial production.

4.Last year, the CSO had estimated the GDP growth rate for 2014-15 and 2013-14 at 7.3 per cent and 6.9 per cent, respectively.


 

IDC SAYS GLOBAL DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION SPENDING TO CROSS $2 BILLION IN 2019

1.Global spending on digital transformation (DX) technologies is expected to cross $2.1 billion by 2019 as companies look at making better use of information related to customers, markets and products, according to research firm IDC.

2.The spending is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.8 per cent over the 2014-2019 forecast period, IDC said in a statement.

3.Spending on DX technologies in the U.S. will follow a similar trajectory, reaching nearly $732 million in 2019, it added.

4.These investments will focus on making business operations more responsive and effective by leveraging digitally-connected products/services, assets, people and trading partners, it added.

5.Information is not only used to inform better decisions and optimise operations and products, but is also monetised in the form of products and services, it said.


 

IND VS AUS, 2ND T20I: KOHLI, SPINNERS SCRIPT HISTORIC SERIES WIN FOR INDIA

1.Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli maintained their prolific form with the bat to secure India’s series-clinching 27-run win over Australia in the second Twenty20 match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today.

2.Man-of-the-series in India’s 4-1 defeat in the one-day internationals, Rohit hit a 47-ball 60 at the top of the order to give the touring side a fast start along with partner Shikhar Dhawan (42).

3.India, who were put in to bat, rode an opening stand of 97 to reach 184 for 3 in their 20 overs with Kohli providing a late assault in a strong top-order performance with a swashbuckling unbeaten knock of 59.


 

INFOSYS INVESTS $4M IN ANOTHER US-BASED STARTUP, WATERLINE DATA SCIENCE

1.Infosys, one of India’s largest IT service providers, today announced that it has made an investment of USD 4 million in Waterline Data Science, a provider of data discovery and data governance software.

2.Waterline Data Science founded by Alex Gorelik is headquartered in Mountain View, California and currently consists of a core team of five. In October 2014, the company had raised a series A round of $7 Million from Menlo Ventures and Sigma West.

3.Waterline Data Science provides data scientists and business analysts with a self-service data catalog to help discover, understand and provision data, and an automated data inventory that enables agile data governance across metadata, data quality and data lineage.


INDIAN WOMEN’S CRICKET TEAM CREATES HISTORY WITH T20 SERIES WIN IN AUSTRALIA

1.Indian eves beat their Australian counterparts in the second Twenty-20 international here by ten wickets on Friday on the basis of the Duckworth-Lewis method.

2.Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and put Australia into bat this morning. Australia scored 128 for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 18 overs.

3.Replying to the Australian score, India scored 69 for no loss in 9.1 overs after being set a ten over target of 66 under the D/L method.
