INDIA CELEBRATES REPUBLIC DAY IN STYLE

1.India celebrated its 67th anniversary of becoming a republic with celebrations across the country on Tuesday, including a military and cultural parade through the capital.

2.French President Francois Hollande was the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi, with maximum security measures employed to thwart any threats.

3.The French leader joined President Pranab Mukherjee and Premier Narendra Modi as the military parade marched through a central avenue near the Presidential Palace.

4.India celebrates the day its constitution was adopted – January 26, 1950 – as Republic Day.

5.French soldiers also took part in the parade. It is thought to be the first time a foreign army contingent has participated in India’s celebrations.

6.The parade included marching troops, military bands, tanks, and other hardware.

7.Colourful floats from various Indian states, traditional dances, and gymnastics by children were also part of the event.


 

PRANAB GIVES ASSENT TO CENTRAL RULE IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH

1.President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday evening approved the Union Cabinet’s recommendation for the imposition of President’s rule on Arunachal Pradesh.

2.The assent was given right after he hosted the traditional ‘At Home’ or reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan for French President Francois Hollande as part of the Republic Day celebrations.

3.Sources at Rashtrapati Bhavan said Mr. Mukherjee signed on the dotted line after being satisfied that the law and order situation in the border State was sensitive to this uncertainty in government.


 

CHENNAI FLOODS’ HERO TO LAUNCH MOBILE APP FOR YOUNGSTERS

1.Mohammad Yunus, who today bagged the Tamil Nadu government’s Anna Medal for Gallantry award 2016 for rescuing people during the December 2015 floods, plans to develop a mobile application to tap the talents of youngsters to serve people.

2.He was instrumental in the rescue of nearly 2,100 people in the December 2015 floods.

3.On the first day of heavy rain on December 1 last year, Yunus and his team in a boat had rescued a pregnant lady and her husband from the flooded Urapakkam area on the outskirts of the city.


HOUSING PROJECT FOR PLANTATION TAMILS SOON

1.The Indian government’s housing project for hill country Tamils of Sri Lanka, envisaging the construction of 4,000 houses, will be launched very shortly. The houses would come up in Uva and Central Provinces. They form part of India’s project of building 50,000 houses, of which 44,000 have been completed.

2.Stating this on Tuesday, India’s High Commissioner Y.K. Sinha, who hoisted the national flag at his India House residence on the occasion of 67th Republic Day, said the authorities were examining the possibility of doing more projects for the hill country Tamils or plantation workers, who, he called, “the most disadvantaged” community in Sri Lanka. Giving an overview, he said a large number of projects were in the pipeline.

3.A handicrafts village in Hambantota would soon be ready, he said, adding that India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj would visit Colombo shortly.
