MALAYALAM POET AND JNANPITH AWARD WINNER ONV KURUP DIES AT 84

1.Noted Malayalam poet and lyricist ONV Kurup passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram today, his family said. He was 84.

2.Mr Kurup was suffering from age-related ailments and leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.

3.A professor of repute who served in many colleges, ONV — as he was popularly known — was the face of the Malayalam cultural world through his works which fetched him the country’s highest literary honour, the Jnanpith Award, in 2007.

4.A recipient of the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan, besides numerous other literary awards, ONV also has national film awards and 13 state film awards to his credit for his lyrics.

5.His love for poetry began during his school days. The period saw his poem “Munnottu” (Forward) about his patriotic feelings, being first published in 1946.


 

AFTER 1,000-YEAR SPLIT, POPE AND RUSSIAN PATRIARCH EMBRACE IN CUBA

1.Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill embraced and kissed on Friday in a historic meeting, uniting to issue a global appeal for the protection of Christians under assault in the Middle East.

2.Nearly 1,000 years after the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split apart, the meeting at an airport terminal in Cuba was the first ever between a Roman Catholic pope and a Russian Orthodox patriarch.

3.They also said large-scale humanitarian aid was required to tend to refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq, lamenting the “massive exodus of Christians.”

4.Cuban President Raul Castro stood to the side during the ceremony, enjoying another moment in the international limelight after receiving Francis last year and restoring diplomatic relations with the United States recently, meeting President Barack Obama in Panama in April.


INDIA, A LAND OF GREAT OPPORTUNITY: MODI

1.Showcasing India as a land of immense opportunities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday told representatives from 68 countries participating in the Make in India Week that India was blessed with Democracy, Demography, and Demand. His government had added Deregulation making it a four-dimensional India waiting for foreign investment and manufacturing companies.

2.Spelling out the potential of the market before foreign investors, Mr. Modi said, “50 of our cities are ready for setting up metro rail systems. We have to build 50 million houses. The requirement of road, rail, waterways is enormous. There is no time for incremental changes. We want a quantum jump.”

3.Prime Minister emphasises the 4Ds — deregulation, democracy, demography and demand.


 

SWEDEN’S SAAB, KALYANI IN JV TO MAKE AIR DEFENCE SYSTEMS

1.Saab Group, a Swedish aerospace and defence company, is set to ink a pact with Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL), to jointly manufacture air defence systems.

2.The joint venture between Saab and KSSL, the defence arm of the Kalyani Group, will make and deliver air defence systems to the Indian customers, according to a company statement.

3.The venture will make subsystems and components for short-range surface-to-air missile system and very short-range air defence systems.

4.KSSL, a 100 per cent unit of Bharat Forge Ltd., is a part of the Kalyani Group, a conglomerate engaged in forgings for automotive and non-automotive sectors, speciality steels and infrastructure.


 

FISCAL MANAGEMENT FAR BETTER THIS YEAR THAN EARLIER: CGA

1.The government’s fiscal management this financial year has been better than the previous years with expenditure being spread out as opposed to the usual bunching up toward the end of the year, according to Controller General of Accounts, M.J. Joseph.

2.“The normal trend in government expenditure over the years has been that expenditures increase in the last two quarters of the financial year, mainly Q4. The criticism is that this is wasteful expenditure and that government departments just spend money so as to exhaust the budget. But this year if you look at the trend of the spending, you’ll find that even up to the six-month period, expenditure was more or less 48-50 per cent of the budgeted amount,”.

3.Another factor that is helping the government better manage its finances is the increasing push towards e-payments, with the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme taking centre-stage.


 

ASHOK LEYLAND TO SET UP 3 ASSEMBLY UNITS IN AFRICA

1.Ashok Leyland, second largest truckmaker in the country, is in the process of establishing its assembly units in Africa, South America and South East Asia over the next three to five years, Gopal Mahadevan, Chief Financial Officer, said.

2.The company expects to invest up to Rs.30 crore in each assembly unit. The company is scouting for a local partner to set up the assembly operations. Cheap labour, tax benefits and savings on logistics cost are primary drivers for establishing the local assembly units.

3.The local units are likely to assemble buses initially and will start assembling trucks later. The company has been securing strong orders for buses from African nations such as Senegal, Zimbabwe etc.

4.Presently, most of the African markets are dominated by Chinese players. The Hinduja flagship company is confident of maintaining edge over Chinese players with its new truck series and local units.

5.Eyes Africa, South East Asia and South America to boost export revenue in 3-5 years


 

BILLIONAIRE AGARWAL TO INVEST $10 BN

1.Billionaire Anil Agarwal will invest $10 billion or Rs.68,000 crore to set up India’s first and one of world’s largest liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacturing units, known as Panel FAB, in Maharashtra.

2.The money will be invested in five phases by Twinstar Display Technologies, promoted by Mr. Agarwal’s investment firm, Volcan Investments.

3.A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed with the Government of Maharashtra on the sidelines of the ‘Make in India’ Week in Mumbai. Mr. Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta Group, said: “We have made good the promise we made to the nation during the Digital India Summit in July 2015.

4.To set up India’s first liquid crystal display panel manufacturing units in Maharashtra


 

CONG.-DMK ALLIANCE SEALED AHEAD OF T.N. ASSEMBLY POLLS

1.The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress have decided to fight the coming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections together.

2.On Saturday, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who visited DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi at his residence here for talks in the morning, expressed confidence that the alliance would form a government in the State.

3.DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin said Mr. Karunanidhi had already made an appeal, through the media, to Mr. Vijayakant to join the alliance. “I think that is enough. I hope he will give serious thought to the invitation and take a good decision,” he said.
