FORD FOUNDATION TAKEN OFF WATCH LIST

Days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S., the Home Ministry issued orders to remove the U.S.-based Ford Foundation from the “prior permission” category.

The Ministry, on the basis of a report sent by the Gujarat government last year, had put the international non-governmental organisation on the “watch list”, citing concern to “national security”.

The Gujarat government report had said that the organisation funded the “anti-India” activities of Citizens for Justice and Peace and Sabrang Trust run by Teesta Setalvad, activist.

The order means that banks will no longer require the Ministry’s clearance to process the foreign funds coming from the foundation to any Indian bank account.

Mr. Modi will meet U.S. President Barack Obama at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington

The Centre had last year also unblocked foreign funds to the tune of $1,50,000 to be released to the foreign donor’s bank accounts as the organisation had exhausted its options to pay salary to its staffers and made a plea before the government.

On several occasions, Ford Foundation representatives met Nripendra Misra, principal secretary to the Prime Minister of India and explained their position.

BHARTI IN 6-CIRCLE SPECTRUM DEAL WITH VIDEOCON FOR 4G BOOST

Deal comes within hours of Idea Cellular calling off a deal with Videocon to buy airwaves.

Bharti Airtel agreed to acquire airwaves in six circles from Videocon Telecommunications for Rs. 4,428 crore. The deal is set to boost Bharti’s country-wide 4G offerings ahead of Reliance Jio’s imminent entry.

The deal came a day after Idea Cellular called off a proposal to acquire Videocon’s spectrum in Gujarat and UP (West) for Rs. 3,310 crore. “Bharti Airtel Ltd. on March 16 entered into a definitive agreement with Videocon Telecommunications Limited (VTL) to acquire, at an aggregate consideration of Rs. 44,280 million, rights to use 2 x 5 MHz spectrum in the 1800 MHz band allotted to VTL,” according to a company statement on Thursday. The six circles are Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, UP (East), UP (West) and Gujarat. The acquisition will enable Bharti to offer 4G services in 19 of 22 circles compared with billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, which has access to the 4G spectrum in all 22 circles in the country.

Vodafone and Idea have spectrum for the high-speed services in five and 12 circles, respectively.

Bharti’s acquisition price of Rs. 4,428 crore is about 65 per cent higher than the regulatory auction reserve price—adjusted for the residual life of 16 years – as the spectrum is contiguous to Bharti’s existing spectrum in 1800MHz.
