PM SALUTES ‘SHRAMIKS’ HARD WORK, DETERMINATION ON LABOUR DAY

“On Labour Day we salute the hardwork, determination & dedication of millions of Shramiks who have an invaluable role in the making of India,” Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet.

The International Labour Day-2016 is being observed today across the globe. This day is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and is also celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

The Labour Day aims to pay tribute to workers’ sacrifices in achieving economic and social rights all over the world.

The Labour Day originates from the United States labor union movement in the late 19th Century, particularly the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work per day.

ARMY DEPOT TURNS TO THE SUN TO DESTROY OLD AMMUNITION

In a major breakthrough, the central ammunition depot of the Army in Maharashtra has devised a method of utilising solar energy for disposing ammunition which have completed their shelf life.

The depot won the ‘CST and solar cooker excellence awards 2016’ of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) which was presented to Brig Sanjay Sethi, Commandant of the depot on April 29.

In CST, mirrors are used to concentrate solar energy to convert water to steam which is directed on the shells, he explained and added that this is the first of its kind development in the world in field of demilitarisation of ammunition.

WORLD SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIP: LAURA MASSARO BEATEN BY NOUR EL SHERBINI

England’s top seed Laura Massaro missed out on a second world squash title as she lost to Egyptian fifth seed Nour El Sherbini in the final of the Women’s World Championship in Malaysia.

Sherbini won 6-11 4-11 11-3 11-5 11-8 to become the youngest women’s world champion at the age of 20.

The Egyptian will replace Massaro as world number one in the new rankings.
