 SYRIA: TURKEY SHOOTS DOWN RUSSIAN WARPLANE FOR VIOLATING AIR SPACE

A Russian warplane has crashed in Syria near the Turkish border on 24 November, according to local reports. The plane fell over Jebel al-Turkman mountain in Latakia, near the border with Turkey. Russian media, the Russian defence ministry, and the Turkish presidency are reporting that the downed jet was a Russian-made Su-24. Both pilots ejected and were seen parachuting to the ground.


 

INTACH AWARD FOR KOLKATA POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL

The recently-renovated 160-year-old Dalanda House, currently known as the Police Training School (PTS), was bestowed the KMC-INTACH Award for Excellence in Conservation (Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage)  on Tuesday. Dalanda House was constructed in 1848 as the only mental asylum catering to Peshwar in the West and Burma in the East.


 

KOLKATA BOOK FAIR TO PAY TRIBUTES TO CHE GUEVERA, VIETNAM WAR

Bolivia will be the theme country at the 40th International Kolkata Book Fair (IKBF), starting early next year, and the organisers will pay tribute to Marxist revolutionary Che Guevera and 40 years of Vietnam War. Along with Bolivia, to commemorate 40 years of Vietnam War, the organisers have decided to accord the status of Guest of Honour country to Vietnam. The book fair, which saw a footfall of about 20 lakh people last year, will be inaugurated on January 25, 2016, and will continue till February 6. The organisers said that the number of bookstalls will be around 600 and over 50 publishers from other parts of country, even from the North-Eastern States, will participate.


 

J&K GOVT. TO LAUNCH TREE PLANTATION DRIVE

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday said that it will soon launch a massive forestation drive in the state under which more than one crore trees would be planted in areas which have witnessed large scale deforestation.


 

NEW SPECIES OF TREE FROG DISCOVERED

The discovery, published in the latest issue of International Taxonomic Journal Zootaxa , is a joint effort by a team comprised Robin Abraham, a researcher from the University of Kansas, USA; Anil Zachariah, a batrachologist from Wayanad and Vivek Philip Cyriac, a researcher, of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram.The team discovered a new species of Rhacophorid tree frog of the genus Ghatixalus. The new species is named Ghatixalus magnus after its large size making it the biggest known tree frog from the Western Ghats.


 

IDEA TO BUY SPECTRUM FROM VIDEOCON FOR RS.3,310 CR

The country’s third largest telecom services provider, Idea Cellular, will buy spectrum in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh (West) from Videocon Telecommunications for Rs 3,310 crore ($499 million) to boost its high-speed data services.Videocon Group is looking to monetize its spectrum across most of the circles and plans to raise another Rs 9,000 to Rs 10,000 crore from spectrum sale.


 

IRCTC TIES UP WITH FOODPANDA; TO LET USERS CHOOSE MEALS FROM A VARIETY OF CUISINE OPTIONS

Expanding further its e-catering facility, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has tied up with online delivery firm Foodpanda, enabling consumers to order from a variety of cuisine options.The collaboration, to be launched at New Delhi railway station next month, will provide customers with the choice to order meals at least two hours before the travel.Food on Track scheme has KFC, Domino’s, Street Foods, Wimpy, TFS, Jan Aahar, Ratna Cafe, Mio Amore, Alibaba, Cafe Lite, Hello Curry and Ratna Cafe besides IRCTC Food Plaza and IRCTC Fast Food Units under its umbrella. The e-catering facility allows passengers to order meals while travelling, either online at www.ecatering.irctc.co.in or by making a phone call to 0120-2383892-99 or the toll-free number at 1800-1034-139. They can also choose to do so through an SMS to 139 by giving details of their PNR and seat number.

As honoured in today’s Google Doodle, 24 November is the 41st anniversary of the discovery of ‘Lucy’, the name given to a collection of fossilized bones that once made up the skeleton of a hominid from the Australopithecus afarensis species, who lived in Ethiopia 3.2 million years ago.

Writer, columnist and journalist Mahip Singh passed away at a private hospital in Gurgaon today after a brief illness, family members said. He was 85. His famous novels include ‘Ye Bhi Nhi’, Abhi Shesh Hai’ and ‘Bich ki Dhoop’.
